Someone, amazingly enough, asked me; “Why Foundation? There are a lot of great organizations out there from futurist organizations or library groups to numerous religions why not one of those?” This really gets to the heart of the issue as all of these organizations have good things and I could dedicate my life to them, but from my stand point it gets down to a handful of key issues and foremost among them is the precarious nature of our society.
Any number of things could easily go wrong and that would be the end. What if we are alone, what if there is no God, What if God doesn’t care?, what if he is trying and trying waiting for one species to work and rise above its creation and if not then letting them die, what if in the vastness of the universe there is only one small planet, orbiting an un-assuming star, with life? It seems to me that, without intelligence, the universe is a boring place. All the good things in life, from family to art, mean nothing without us and likewise, without intelligence, things like this don’t matter. If you argue that they do matter, then to whom do they matter? This is the first and main issue, “To Whom Do they matter?” and I argue that without intelligence they don’t matter.
Again then; “Why Foundation?” If in fact there is nothing but us then, without us, nothing matters and WE as a species are trapped, one wrong move and it is over and there is nothing worthwhile in the universe or all creation. But God is a God of Love you might say, and well yes that ‘may’ be true. I would argue that Love is a motivational factor and not a physical quality, and possible a subject for any number of religions, so I choose to focus on the one consistent physical quality that defines God based on the assumption that there is a God.
This leads me to two things, one: without intelligence nothing matters, two: if there is a God then intelligence is the glory of God. In either case, we are in a position of being dangerously close to collapse and nothingness. As a species it seems logical to, above all else, learn to be resilient in our intelligence and in all that we have learned. No single organization is focused on this and this seems to be the most logical focus; and what I want to do dedicate my life to. So that everything else might have meaning and purpose; and THAT is why “Foundation”.
To that end, for the preservation of the species and our knowledge and our eternal progression, that we might work to be resilient, that nothing can destroy us; we work towards Foundation, that we might build upon this forever.
